D.C. Area Scaffolding Company Increases Driver And Warehouse Efficiency With Demountable Body System
- 2005

When Scaffold Resource of Temple Hills, MD realized that the one straight truck with a flat bed body was not enough to cover the increasing workload, owner Charlie Weiss faced a decision. He could go out and buy another straight truck and hire another driver or try a unique system that a number of other scaffolding companies in the area were using.

Their decision to implement the Demountable Truck Body System by Demountable Concepts has proved to be a good one. With a single truck and three demountable flat bed bodies, service has improved and labor and equipment costs have been reduced. More jobs can be scheduled without the fear of service failures because of the flexibility the system allows.

The system enables the driver to demount the flat bed body at the warehouse or job site. This simple process takes approximately ten minutes and allows the driver to mount another body for the next job. While the driver is out on deliveries, warehouse personnel can load his next run. When the driver returns, he simply swaps bodies and is on the road again.

According to Charlie Weiss, “Job site crews can load or unload scaffolding without our driver being there. This is convenient for the crews and has eliminated driver down time for us”. They have also been able to do a lot of delivery and pick up work at job sites during off-hours. Weiss adds, “By avoiding daytime traffic in DC, we can do more work in fewer hours and we’re also getting better fuel efficiency by staying out of the traffic.” His warehouse personnel also say that the yard is more organized. They don’t have to stage the next load; they simply load it on a freestanding body. Customer pick-up at the yard is also easier now because of the newly available space.

Probably the most important benefit the system has provided is flexibility. Scaffold Resource can now make more service commitments to customers as well as potential customers. This has allowed the company to continue its rapid growth rate while keeping labor and equipment costs under control. The company has stated that they’ll continue to add demountable equipment as warranted and feel more scaffolding companies should investigate the system.
